What is Otsukimi?
Otsukimi, the Japanese autumn festival celebrating the Harvest Moon, falls on the fifth day of the eighth month of the Lunar calendar. Japan-America Society of Dallas Fort Worth now celebrates Otsukimi in North Texas on the Saturday evening closest to the Harvest moon. Otsukimi festivals in Japan involve activities such as making rabbit masks, decorating with pampas grass, and eating dango. Why rabbits? Because while Americans see the Man in the Moon, the Japanese like to tip their head to the side and see a rabbit making mochi, soft rice cakes.
Our Otsukimi Moon-Viewing celebration incorporates musical performances, martial arts demonstrations, vendors selling Japanese food and wares, family-friendly cultural activities, and more! Otsukimi started as a small gathering and grew to become to a gathering of thousands today. There will be plenty for you and your family to do and enjoy!
This year’s event in 2024 in Haggard Park in Plano, TX will mark our 25th annual Otsukimi Moon Viewing Festival.
Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth is excited to help foster cultural appreciation and awareness. Join us as we support our misson of We know there is a bright future for this celebration and all Japanese cultural events in North Texas.
