Theme: Tragedy in Memphis (1968).

Things had changed for the movement since 1965. King had gone north to Chicago and had seen things that changed his focus to helping the poor and defeating the 3 evils of racism, poverty, and militarism. His denouncement of the Vietnam War brought great opposition. Yet, his death occurred because he chose, against the advice of other leaders, to help sanitation workers in Memphis. His "I've Been to the Mountaintop" sermon the night before was prophetic. His death was tragic, but his death didn't end the movement. Just days after his death, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968. We must continue this work.
